Has Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare gone too far?

Activision have just announced the highly anticipated next entry into the Call of Duty series. Call of Duty Advanced Warfare will not only mark a fresh start for the franchise, it will also be the solo-debut Call of Duty game from Sledgehammer Games (who previously co-developed MW3 with Infinity ward).

This reveal trailer certainly looks stunning. Scheduled for a Novemeber, 2014 release, Advanced Warfare looks to be a game that is packed full of awesome. Let’s review:

Kevin Spacey’s voice AND face?

Media-loved superstar, Kevin Spacey? Check! Spacey, while quiet on the movie front the last few years, has found a resurgent level of stardom thanks to US TV drama, House of Cards. Having not only his acting chops, but his screen likeness will be a massive plus for this game.

Destruction of globally recognised landmarks? Check! You can’t really be considered an action movie, nor a triple-A videogame shooter unless you’re destroying something everybody knows and loves. The Golden Gate bridge certainly looks to have seen better days in the trailer!

Hover bikes, eerily reminiscent of ones from Return of the Jedi? Check! The kind of thing you didn’t know you needed until you saw it! And it doesn’t stop there: cloaking helicopters, ability to leap great distances, climbing the buildings with futuristic sticky gloves like you’re Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol? Check! Check! Check!

It even has walking tanks I’m going to dub ‘mini Metal Gears’, this is a project that Sledgehammer felt it was important to pack as many knock out blows into as possible!

But why?

Could it be that they want to distance themselves from previous Call of Duty titles? Perhaps it’s simply looking at the future as the untapped story line? Makes sense. Call of Duty started life as a World War II game, developed over the years through Vietnam and up to Modern Warfare as it ping-ponged between developers, Infinity Ward and Treyarch.

However, I think one of the more telling aspects comes to light when you look at what Advanced Warfare HASN’T got.

This game looks to have almost everything! Almost…

So, what hasn’t it got? Well, it hasn’t got Titans. It really really wants Titans, but no. THAT would have been a step too far.

What do you do when you can’t put Titans in your game to compete with (ex-Infinity Ward employees’) Respawn Entertainment’s blockbuster Titanfall? Well…everything else! Clearly.

Sometimes when you throw enough awesome into one game, you end up with a truly unique, unbeatably fantastic, super satisfying experience that renders all other games irrelevant due to their massive inferiority.

Other times you realise you’re just creating ‘Homer’s Web Page’, cramming all the most popular bits of other peoples ideas onto one screen. Let’s hope it’s the first one.

 

The footage shown was captured on Xbox One, but it’s a fairly safe bet we’ll see Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare on PC and PS4 come November 4th, 2014.
